who we are
We are mother and daughter taking care of our small family business. Martina works remotely and takes care of the the administration whereas Paola – the mother – is the host and will be your main point of contact for your bookings.
Having grown up in Florence, Martina has now taken some time to explore the world, and travel a lot for work as well as pleasure. Meeting new people and exploring different cultures fascinates her but she returns home regularly to savour Italian food and culture.
Paola has lived in Florence all her life and is very knowledgable about the city’s history and crafts. In keeping with local traditions she makes her own fine linens and tapestries.
We are very proud to call Florence home, and we would love to help you get to know this beautiful, vibrant city!
Some recommendations
Santo Spirito and San Frediano have an organic mix of locals and foreigners that live in town. You will also find many delis, bakeries, boutiques, craftsman workshops and art studios. You will find it animated during the day with markets, passing tourists and students of all ages, Piazza Santo Spirito comes to life also in the evening with numerous bars, restaurants, ”trattorie” and cafès.
In Tuscany, urban style and culture live in close proximity to wild, spiritual landscapes. Florence is one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe, and the best way to admire it is from the top of some of the most famous belvederes. Wait until sunset, take a camera with you and be ready to see some of the most stunning panoramas!
ENJOY SOME OF THE BEST PANORAMIC VIEWS IN TOWN AND AROUND:
• La Rinascente is a well-known fashion store and it has a rooftop bar with a stunning 360 degrees view in the heart of the city.
• Piazzale Michelangelo has the best view from one of the surrounding hills. There are busses but a taxi shouldn’t be more that 17€. It’s also possible to walk up from San Niccolo’. There are steps and it takes 40 mins from the apartment, but it’s an amazing walk.
• Fiesole is another beautiful view spot. You will need a car, taxi or catch the public bus.
• Monteriggioni and Pienza are two Medieval villages that are definitely worth seeing and not as touristy than Siena or San Gimignano.
• La Val d’Orcia is one of the most iconic landscaped of Tuscany. This is where the movie The Gladiator was filmed.
Italian food is famous worldwide, and each region has its own speciality. Florence (Tuscany) has a medieval history that influences the traditional staples of Florentine cuisine. Tuscan cuisine has a reputation for being known as “cucina povera” because, back in the day, Tuscan “Nonne” utilized everything they had in the kitchen and on the farm to prepare meals. So that gives Tuscan food and the lovely food of Florence a very simple, yet hearty characteristic. Basically, it won’t leave you hungry!
CHECK OUT SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANTS, TRATTORIAS:
Cibrèo: High-end restaurant. They also have a trattoria, a café and a Tuscan oriental cuisine restaurant.
Enoteca Fuori Porta: Basic food but they have one of the best wine selection in town. More than 300 different bottles. One of my favourites and not too expensive is Bolgheri.
Trattoria il Sabatino: Not glamorous but the food is very traditional. 10 mins walk.
Alla Vecchia Bettola: High-end affordable trattoria. 10 mins walk.
Il Santo Bevitore: It’s almost opposite the apartment. Very good food & wine! They also have a local bakery and a deli.
Vivanda: Delicious vegetarian restaurant. Amazing handmade pasta and organic produce. 5 mins walk.
Trattoria Omero: Another extraordinary trattoria with a great view of the Tuscan countryside!! You need a car or catch a taxi.
Osteria Santo Spirito: Good pasta and classic dishes. 5 mins walk
Trattoria La Lola: Simple traditional food for lunch. Dinner time is a different menu which is still good but not as traditional.
Another factor that affects the cuisine here, are the fresh, local ingredients like tomatoes, rosemary, porcini mushrooms, truffles, olives, aubergines, oregano, basil, and a few varieties of meat, cheese, and bread. It won’t be difficult to find good food in Florence!
HERE ARE OUR FAVOURITE PIZZA AND SNACK BARS:
Semel: Best sandwiches in town!!!
Da Gherardo: Probably one of the best Pizzeria in town! 5 mins walk
Berberè: They have a selection of different pizza dough and vegan pizzas. 10 mins walk
Gusta Pizza: Quite popular pizzeria. It’s not possible to reserve a table. You just have to show up. Waiting times are not too long. They turn around tables quite quickly. 5 mins walk
Gusta Panino: Partner of the above. They make amazing sandwiches with local produce. 5 mins walk
Gelateria la Carraia: Best ice cream in town. It’s on the corner from the apartment.
Santo Forno: The best backers in the area. They really care about all their produce and the origin of their ingredients.
Volume: Good for aperitifs and crepes. They have live music in the evenings.
Italy is known worldwide for its high quality and striking design – and Florence is an excellent showcase for both. ALL OF THE LOCATIONS LISTED BELOW ARE WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE FROM US:
Since the 14th century, Via Tornabuoni has housed beautiful, stately palaces of noble Florentine families such as Antinori and Strozzi and now you will find boutiques for Gucci, Prada, Pucci, Cartier and Bulgari. This area is growing and expanding, including Via della Vigna and Via Santo Spirito where you will find lots of ateliers and workshops. If you fancy an all-inclusive fashion trip out of town, there are also daily round-trip service from central Florence to the luxury outlet, The Mall Firenze.
Florence was home to one of the most famous antique and collectible dealers in Italy (if not the world): Stefano Bardini. Via Maggio and Via de’ Fossi. Both these streets are full of important antique shops where you can find valuable artworks and collectibles. Passing their windows sometimes seems like passing by a museum, with wonderful pieces on display.
Aside from being famous around the globe for its gorgeous and sparkling windows, Ponte Vecchio is also famous for the jewellery shops located on the bridge where you can find lots of handmade, unique jewellery. This is a skill that found itself ingrained in Florence thanks to Lorenzo de Medici and his passion for gold jewellery.
